ConocoPhillips
and
Climate Change
Below are extracts of letters between the oil company ConocoPhillips, owner of
Jet petrol stations, and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full
are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find
out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil
companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about
climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of
The Polluters.
To
Archie Kennedy,
Managing Director –
I am your typical Jet man – funny, direct, patriotic, up for a fight. What I
didn’t know is that
ConocoPhillips is a global
company that owns Jet petrol stations in the UK. Good for you. We need more
global companies to keep the world economy on the right track.
I’m
writing about global warming. It’s clear that it’s just an excuse for
underinvestment in roads based on suspect computer simulations and to get the
green vote. But in my book there are no votes in higher prices, loss of jobs,
economic malaise and roads with potholes. However, the government is in thrall
to the green lobby and the madness of the moment.
As JFK said, “ask not want you can do for your country but your country can do
for you.” Well, you’ve done plenty for this country by converting us to oil, so
it’s about time you were rewarded for it. Lower taxes, higher CO2 targets, and
an elevation to the peerage.

Thank you for your letters of 6th July, 10th August and 18th
September, 2007, from which you comments are duly noted.
