E.ON and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the energy supplier E.ON, which owns PowerGen, and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Dr Paul Golby, Chief Executive –

I’ve just discovered that Powergen is part of E.ON, the world's largest investor owned energy company and with around 9 million electricity and gas accounts. Being a doctor must be useful in your line of work. Good for you – and I’m proud to have one of those accounts. Or the wife is for expenses’ purposes.

I’ve read that E.ON ‘produce electricity from a portfolio of world class power stations’. I’ve heard of a share portfolio, not a portfolio of power stations. It sounds good. Perhaps the generic term for power stations could be a burn or a rage.

I’m concerned that your portfolio will need to close due to this commotion about climate change. Now, climate change is all to do with solar and earth activity and nothing about manmade pursuits. It’s really about interference in big business.

Now I’m all for recycle, reuse, regurgitate, but turning down the central heating, turning off the television, and chucking out the baby with the bathwater – I’m not for it. And as for sharing baths. I last shared a bath with Mrs Shullot in the first flush of our relationship, thirty years ago. I’m not sure if either of us is ready to repeat the experience.

E.ON replied

E.ON recognises the importance of pursuing all available options to meet national energy objectives to reduce CO2 emissions.

While we are one of the largest owners and operators of wind farms in the UK, we are also a global leader in planned wind farm investment and are planning to develop the world’s largest offshore wind farm.
