The RAC and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Debbie Hewitt, Managing Director –

I
’ve been a loyal member of the RAC for years. And I now see that you’re the number one car breakdown service – well done! I’m sure it must partly be your slogan – RAC to the rescue.

I’m writing because I’m concerned that the made-up story of global warming is taking away the civil liberties of the motorist. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to drive around assertively in my 4x4, keeping other traffic in order and letting know who’s boss? It’s as much a non-story as the antics of the nobodies on Big Brother, but with less flesh.

Don’t Monibot and his cronies know that eco cars are for wimps? No eco car will ever be able to swerve round cyclists and pram pushers in the same way as my 4x4. So that’s another few lives destroyed – though the cyclist is no cause for mourning.

Debbie Hewitt replied –

The environmental debate has certainly moved up the public and political agenda in recent years with increasing focus on emissions from transport. Not surprising when transport accounts for 26% of UK carbon emissions – and rising.

We believe that more measures are needed to promote greener motoring in future. That said, we do not believe motorists should be penalised for the type of car they drive – be it through choice or necessity.
