RWE npower and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the energy supplier RWE npower and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To
Andrew Duff, Group Chief Executive Officer –

You must be proud to run npower. You are the UK’s no. 1 domestic electricity supplier in customer satisfaction. I know that it is fully deserved. I am the UK’s no.1 domestic computer supplier in Palmers Green, so we have a lot in common.

Why I’m writing is I am concerned about the policies being brought in to control global warming and the effect on the fuel industry.

That’s the problem with being a successful industry – you get clobbered for it.

There’s a saying in my line of work. Sod ’em. Throw this global warming nonsense back in the face of the government, and get on with what you’re best at – running coal, oil and gas-fired power stations. Don’t bother with solar power – it’s not sunny enough – or wind power – that will only charge up a few batteries.

RWE npower replied –

As a commercial organisation we strive to achieve carbon reductions whilst delivering the returns our shareholders require from us.

Government has a big part to play in this to ensure that the economic drivers are right to encourage us and other energy companies to make the right investments and we work hard with government and other stakeholders to achieve the right balance to ensure the UK continues to have reliable affordable and increasingly low carbon electricity.
