Below are extracts of letters between the airline company Aer Lingus and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To Dermot Mannion, Chief Executive of Aer Lingus –
Due to my business interests I’m a frequent flyer to Dublin and other parts of Ireland. You are always my first choice as I can rely on your three clover company for a very good service at an excellent price, and you don’t pander to your passengers with flirty stewardesses and fancy food. Sometimes I even bring my family with me – but not if I can help it; a one-hour flight without food is still enough time for my son Wayne to suffer from air rage.
I’m concerned about the actions being brought in to fight global warming and the effect it will have on your company. However, the aviation industry is only responsible for 2% of CO2 emissions and airline fuel efficiency has improved by 20% in the last decade. Haven’t you done enough when you didn’t have much to do in the first place?
Dermot Mannion replied –
As you have noted, airline fuel efficiency in general has improved significantly in recent years.
We will
continue to work to improve our environmental performance whilst also working,
through the AEA, for sensible and workable regulations at European level on this
matter. |
