Bellway and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the house builder Bellway and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To John Watson, Chief Executive –

My son Wayne has talked about becoming a builder. I’m not convinced. He swears a lot, likes his tea and is always mooning, but I’m sure there’s more to it that that. He had previously mentioned being an air steward with British Airways so I don’t know he got from there to being a brickie, but I suppose it is progress.

The reason for my letter is not to ask for work for him – I’ve got a business partner who owes me a favour – but to ask what are the prospects for the construction industry? My concern is these “Greenpeace” hippies stirring up alarm about the environment, and saying we are all going to kill ourselves in a toxic cloud of global warming.

Don’t let the greens dictate what you do. They wouldn’t know an RSJ from a slab of concrete, even if it hit them in the face, which is not such a bad idea. One by one they and their allies in the PC movement are taking away our liberties – smoking, drinking and keeping down the working classes.

Please assure me that you are working to stop the greens and counter the controls on your industry so I can turn my son into a layer of bricks.

John Watson replied –

If you speak to central government they are adamant more homes are necessary to satisfy the growing population. A career in house building or construction despite global warming is a good long term ploy for the correct individual.
