BMI British Midland and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the airline company BMI British Midland and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Nigel Turner, chief executive officer –

I’ve travelled throughout Europe on your planes and so know what an excellent job you do. Your routes reach the parts that are other airlines do not reach.

With flights cheaper than ever and 2.5 billion air passengers last year which is six per cent greater than the year before, and planes such a safe way to travel (except Aeroflot), I cannot understand why anyone would want to bring an end to the airline business. But this is just what the greens want to do. Airline Passenger Duty, Kyoto Protocol, Days of Action of Aviation. What is the justification for this?

Clearly the problem is that the greens don’t like to see anyone enjoying themselves on the cheap unless it is in activity that they approve. Well in which case we may as well chuck it all, go and live in tepees, not cut our hair for a year, wash in mud, play the flute, dance round fires and indulge in al fresco sex. Now I have no intention to do any of these debauched indulgences, apart from possibly the last one.

The greens have no power and they take no responsibility. But it does not stop them being the greatest attack on post-war democracy since Al-Qaeda and Channel 4’s Big Brother. They are infiltrating governments everywhere and turning the heads of politicians to their cause – Brown, the prime minister before him, the boy in Cabinet who is just out of his school trousers.

Nigel Turner replied –

Dear Peter

As you will appreciate, there are many items of correspondence that pass through my office, however rarely do I receive a letter offering such support!

Thank you for taking the time to write to me.

Best Personal Regards
