Drax and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the energy supplier Drax power station and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Dorothy Thompson, Chief Executive –

You must have the toughest job in Britain. You are responsible for meeting 7% of our energy needs, without which this country would fall apart.

Your website does not disclose that Drax is responsible for 25% of the country’s CO2 emissions. It should. Be out and proud.

The greens say that those responsible for CO2 emissions ought to be on trial as if responsible for war crimes. Ha! What nonsense. You’re not Slobodan Milosevic, you’re Bob Geldof without the swearing and the bad haircut.

Just remember who you are dealing with here. Greens are urban types who have rich parents they never admit to except when cashing their cheques.

So keep on doing what you are best at. Meeting 7% of our energy’s needs and producing 25% of our CO2.

Drax replied

The actions that we are taking to reduce our emissions have been widely reported, yet some continue to target us purely because of our size. Yes, we are the largest single source of CO2 emissions in the UK – last year we emitted 22.7 milliion of CO2 – but then we are nearly twice as large as the next largest coal-fired power station and meet 7% of the electricity needs of the UK; the two go hand in hand.
