Esso and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the oil company Esso (also known as Exxon
Mobil) and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page.
This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket,
energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house
builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name
Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To Ansel Condray, Chairman –
I want to applaud you for
your stance on climate change. As a member of the Global Climate Coalition you
are taking a lead to fight the gigantic whopper that is global warming.
I see that Exxon Mobil
partly funded George Bush’s bid for the White House and is the only oil company
to not invest in renewable energy.
Well done for standing up to the StopEsso campaign with their lies alleging that
you sabotaged the Kyoto agreement, misinform US policy makers and confuse the
American public (is that so difficult to do?). They say that you fund the
Competitive Enterprise Institute that disseminates propanda saying climate
change does not exist. Congratulations to you if you do.
When I went to the link
on your website about reducing greenhouse gas emissions the page would not load.
Very shrewd. It gives the appearance of doing something while not actually
showing how. I wish I had thought of that one for my own range of websites.
Esso
replied –
We have checked our website and it seems to be loading pages properly.
ExxonMobil takes the issue of climate change seriously and we are taking many
actions within our business and working with others to address the risk it
poses.
