Hyundai an
d Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Hyundai and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Tony Whitehorn, Managing Director –

I have always driven Hyundai. Currently it’s the Sonata. It looks good, is well-built, and everything is in the right place. It should be a woman. I once said this to Mrs Shullot but she swore at me, saying that a big car is just a substitute for a small Jack Horner. I bet Angelina Jolie wouldn’t do that.

There are 30 million cars in this country. Five-sixths of the total distance we travel every year is by car. Three-quarters of households have a car. Nearly everyone has a driving licence. Doesn’t that say something? We all love the car! Why else would we fork out thousands of pounds for one, decorate them with dangly things and even give them names (the womenfolk that is, when they don’t have any children) – we don’t name anything else we own. Most of my cars have lasted longer than my girlfriends, before I dump both of them.

So why is the government trying to stop us using cars?

yundai replied –

We are pleased to hear that you are satisfied with the Hyundai product.

All our vehicles in the UK whether they are past, present or future must comply with EU Directives and UK Government type approval regulations.

At the present time we have managed to achieve this whilst still producing a reliable product, which we consider is excellent value for money.
