The International Air Transport Association and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the International Air Transport Association and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Gio
vanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO –

I see that the International Air Transport Association – IATA – represents, leads and serves the airline industry. You have 94% of air traffic for your membership – a share of support that any politician in a democracy would be proud of.

I don’t think it’s fair when people say your logo looks like the badge worn by the SS. When my boy Wayne said this to me I accused him of sneaking at my Second World War magazines again.

I am concerned about the demands being put upon the airline industry due to the fabrication that is called “climate change”. You are being squeezed to do more and more to save the environment when you have already done enough. Air transport pays for its own infrastructure, and contributes 10 euros for every journey in government revenues and avoided expenditure. Okay, so you don’t pay fuel tax or VAT on tickets.

Wayne says that he wants to be an air steward, in particular with British Airways. I don’t know what this means, and I’ve tried to put him off, but what are his prospects if the skies are empty?

Later letter to
Giovanni Bisignani –

You represent the airline industry but you have shown the communication skills of a Norwegian blue parrot and are as responsive as my wife when I’m tanked up on ten pints.

As the number one computer supplier in Palmers Green I always respect my punters, even if they’re chavs.

Sadly
the International Air Transport Association declined to reply
