Mazda an
d Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Mazda and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Rob Lindley, Managing Director –

Can I say how much I like the MX-5? It’s great to drive, looks good and makes the right impression on whoever is sitting next to me. And of course it can move a bit. In theory you can outrun a speed camera at 172mph. When are you going to make a Mazda fast enough so I can test this?

I’ve owned a Mazda all my life. It used to be the 323 GTI which was fine when we had the children. But now they’re teenagers they are old enough to get the bus.

When I read Top Gear I don’t want it polluted with pages about “green issues”. I want speeding machines of masculinity coming at me out of the page and adverts full of Mazdas oozing style and sophistication. All the things that make you go Zoom-Zoom.

And whatever happened to the semi-naked girls draped over the bonnet? I don’t see that in Top Gear. Bring back the birds.

Rob Lindley replied –

Thank you very much for your letter of 6 July. I have to confess it made me chuckle! With regard to outrunning speed cameras, I’m afraid this is not behaviour that I can encourage. However, I do believe that some of the Mazda rotary-engine vehicles being used in drag business may fit the bill!

I enclose for your interest and with some nervousness the latest issue of the Mazda magazine. I do hope that this doesn’t put you off our cars and our brand!

Kind Regards

Rob Lindley
