National
Express and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the coach company National Express and Peter Shullot
about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is
one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy
supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and
other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot
is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To Richard
Bowker, Chief Executive –
Congratulations.
You’re the number one national coach network. And rightly so. My layabout
teenage son Wayne is a regular user of your coaches ever since he lost his
driving licence for dangerous driving. He’s the one who is always asleep when
your coach pulls into Victoria. So I know you provide comfortable seats!
Why I’m writing is because of this fuss in the news about climate change. Now
I’m no scientist but I don’t believe a word of it. Everyone knows that the earth
gets colder and then hotter. One year it will be an Ice Age. Another year it
will be a meteorite wiping out the dinosaurs. So why don’t the politicians
accept it?
I’m like you. As a successful businessman in the world of IT I’ve done my share
of mergers and efficiencies, and dealt with the workers who have needed to move
on in the name of progress and the common interest of the shareholders. So
you’ll understand me when I say that I don’t like governments, bandwagons, and
interference.
National Express replied –
I am delighted you have such a positive view of our service.
National Express does recognise that climate change is a serious challenge and
we are committed to playing our role in reducing this. Fortunately coaches are
actually the most efficient form of transport in terms of emissions of
greenhouse gases per passenger kilometre.
