Persimmon and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the house builder Persimmon and Peter Shullot about
climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one
of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier
and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other
companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is
made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To Mike Farley, Group
Chief Executive –
I see that Persimmon is
the UK's leading house builder, selling over 16,700 homes a year, and is the
first house builder to enter the FTSE 100. You get my vote. You may also get
some of my money if you can come up with the goods about the quality of your
properties. It’s not for me, of course, but my daughter Tracey. She needs to
settle down and stop running around with her present crowd of druggies, drinkers
and ravers; particularly if she is to leave school with any qualifications. We
make appointments to meet at the breakfast table but she’s always late. As soon
as she’s reached the age of majority, can hold a title deed, and work out how to
turn on the dishwasher I want her in a place of her own. I’ve had enough of
supporting my family from nursery to nursing home.
Why I’m bothering you, Mike, is the changes you are meant to bring in to meet
“climate change”.
Your slogan is
Together we make a home – but not if it’s made out of cardboard. I see that
this new man Brown wants you to build “eco homes”. That’s alright if you want a
home made from logo but I’d like Tracey to have something a bit more sturdy.
Persimmon replied –
Through the House Builders Federation we are making representations to the
Government to ensure that their objectives and legislative programme are capable
of being achieved in practice. As long as all private sector housebuilders are
developing to common standards, we will not be at a disadvantage to our
competitors.
