Peugeot and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Peugeot, who also own Citroen,
and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of
the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your
supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines,
house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name
Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To
Pierre Louis Colin, Managing Director –
Your slogan is The drive of your life – or the drive of my wife as I like to say
to Mrs Shullot every time we get in the car. She smiled the first time I said
it. The car is actually in her maiden name – it’s easier with the insurance and
the points on the driving licence. But I’ll be dead before she gets the keys to
it.
I’m a patriot. We’ve got an island mentality, warm
beer, chicken tikka masala and the Olympics (no offence,
Pierre) – albeit with a logo that looks like a swastika and a budget that’s
going to cost us an arm and a leg (I
don’t know how that translates into French).
But the country’s going to the dogs.
The
greens want to take all the pleasure out of driving. Don’t we have enough
barriers already? Road humps, the congestion charge, learners, Nissan cars,
women drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, traffic wardens, speed cameras, the
police, seat belts, white vans, anti drinking campaigns (what’s wrong with one
for the road?), Mazda cars, the mobile phone ban. If the greens have their way
there will be no point in continuing to own and buy a car.
Peugeot replied –
I was delighted to learn that you are pleased with your new 807. It is always
very pleasant to receive positive feedback regarding our vehicles from our
customers. The humorous content of your letter brightened up the day.
Your comments and observations about continuing to produce vehicles that
customers want to drive have been noted and I would like to take this
opportunity to thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us.
