Renault and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Renault and Peter Shullot about
climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one
of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier
and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other
companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is
made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To
Roland Bouchara, Managing Director –
The Renault Espace – what a car. It’s good to handle, quiet and a smooth gear
box. A joy to drive. The car’s in the wife’s name for reasons that I think are
obvious – but that doesn’t mean she ever gets to drive it! I like your slogan as
well. Createur
D’Automobiles. What does it mean, by the way?
The
reason I’m writing, Roland, is all this clamour about climate change. How many
jobs will be lost and factories closed before anyone is going to stand up and
says it’s a myth? Just in the same way it’s a myth that reflective number plates
can beat speed cameras. I know, because I’ve tried and have the three points on
my licence (or the wife has).
I don’t want to be forced into owning a green car that breaks down as often as
Jonny Wilkinson and has the safety record of a privatised rail company.
Renault replied –
I am very glad that you are enjoying your Espace, we always appreciate positive
customer comments. Createur D’Automobiles means Creator of Cars.
Renault as a company is committed to being as environmentally friendly as
possible whilst still producing stylish, economical cars that our customers will
continue to purchase and enjoy.
