The Road
Haulage Association and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the Road Haulage Association and Peter Shullot about
climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one
of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier
and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other
companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is
made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To Roger
King, Chief Executive –
Road haulage
is the backbone of Britain. You keep this country moving, taking freight into
and around the nation, unrecognised by everyone except on the inside lane of
motorways. You are unfairly known for Yorkie bars and hedgehog sandwiches. But
without you, this country would come to a standstill.
And the thanks you receive for this work? The Renewable Transport Fuels
Obligation that means you have to use “biofuels”. Livingstone’s London Low
Emission Zone that means you will be charged to enter our capital city.
Increased investment in rail and water freight but not road haulage.
I am an ordinary 4x4, three-car household motorist who like you has to suffer
the draconian measures to cut CO2 emissions due to the Great Deception that is
climate change. How do you stay quiet in the face of such provocation?
You went on strike in 2000. You brought the country to a halt in your selfless
crusade for cheaper fuel. The green loons were nowhere to be seen. They couldn’t
take a bit of direct action. They sit around bleating about the environment like
demented sheep – but they were too spineless to stand up for what they believe
in. Well done!
Would you do it again? If so, count me among your number as a supporter from the
man in the street.
To the barricades and the fire braziers!
Roger
King replied –
Thank you for your letter of 6 July. It was most kind of you to
write.
At the moment we are locking horns with TfL over their pointless Low Emission
Zone. If you only knew the chaos this is causing, all in the interest of Ken
displaying his environmental credentials. It is an absolute scandal, and
extremely worrying for business and yes Londoners generally. But the mighty
Mayor must be obeyed especially with an election looming.
Yours sincerely
Roger
King
