Ryanair and Climate Change
Below are extracts of letters between
the
airline company Ryanair and Peter Shullot
about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is
one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy
supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and
other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot
is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To
Michael O’Leary, Chief Executive –
You are a brave and honourable man. I applaud you for standing up to the greens
and their allies in government who are using climate change to clobber the
hard-working aviation industry. We all know that this global warming is a myth,
but there is a media conspiracy to deny this.
So you’ve been called by a government minister who no one has heard of the
"irresponsible face of capitalism". Good for you – it shows you’re getting
through to these numbskulls. It’s the kind of attack you will need to expect for
the stand you have been taking. Some might say you’re a loudmouth and an idiot
for always baring your teeth, but I am not of their number.
The aviation industry contributes hardly anything to global warming. What’s 1.6%
of carbon emissions between friends? It’s negligible.
Could I ask for a photo for my teenage son, Wayne? He’s taken to reading
celebrity magazines, dreaming of art school and wanting to go on Big Brother. A
photo of you would inspire the boy to get a grip on himself.
Michael O’Leary replied –
Dear Mr Shullot
I thank you for your letter dated 6th July and for your support
against further taxes on air travel under the guise of the environment. As you
rightly point out aviation accounts for less than 2% of worldwide greenhouse gas
emissions and is therefore neither the cause of, nor the solution to, climate
change or global warming.
I am afraid we don’t have any photos for your teenage son, but I enclose a copy
of our current inflight brochure which has a suitably brushed up version of my
mug shot! (page 7)
Best wishes
Michael O’Leary
