Shell and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the oil company Shell and Peter Shullot about
climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one
of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier
and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other
companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is
made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To
Jeroen van der Veer, Chief Executive –
I see
that there is a campaign called Stop Shell. It is alleging that you are
responsible for
human rights
abuses and destroying the environment. Don’t these people understand you are
responsible for exactly the opposite? By undertaking oil exploration in
countries such as Iraq and Nigeria you will raise the level of wealth in these
God forsaken places and help them to stand on their own two feet.
Let me know if you want any help standing up to the greens. I’m sure you have
them already but I have useful contacts in Russia, Afghanistan, Rhodesia
(Zimbabwe) and Korea (North and South).
I’d appreciate to hear what Shell can do to keep the greens in their place.
Shell replied –
In Shell we respect and work in partnership with environmental organisations to
identify and minimise the social and environmental impact of our activities.
Thank you for your offer to “help”, but we have no interest in following up.
