Taylor Woodrow and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the house builder Taylor Woodrow and Peter Shullot
about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is
one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy
supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and
other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot
is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Ian
Smith, Chief Executive –
You have a proud record of erecting great buildings –
Donnington Power Station, Calder Hall Nuclear Power
Station, Liverpool Cathedral and Ronan Point. So now I’m ready to put
away my hard drive and am looking to move into one of your apartments on the
Costa del Sol. I’ve had enough of my children and charities tapping me for money
just because I’m rich, so me and the good lady wife are looking to renew our
friendship with old business acquaintances in Spain. They’ve told us it’s a good
place to live with the sun and the sea, where everyone turns a blind eye and you
don’t have to learn the native lingo.
Before we take the plunge I want to be assured that your homes will be free of
the restrictions on business brought in by the Eurobullies in Brussels to combat
this thing called “climate change”. “Zero carbon”, “sustainability”, “energy
performance” – do these words have a real meaning? Man to man, we know that
their directives and regulations are just a device to interfere in the work of
successful business, while giving the workers the right to strike on whatever
whim they have that day. How can you be expected to meet the housing shortage,
cut CO2 emissions, turn a profit and still have the occasional afternoon on the
golf course or with the secretary?
Later letter to Taylor Woodrow –
My letter isn’t a dodgy email from a Nigerian promising millions if only you
give your bank account details. I appreciate you have other things to deal
with, such as a takeover and the inevitable pay rise, but I would like a
response. Still ignore me and you’ll have to change your logo of four men
pulling a rope to that of a man in earmuffs.
Sadly Taylor Woodrow declined to reply
