Vauxhall
and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Vauxhall and Peter Shullot
about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is
one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy
supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and
other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot
is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
Vauxhall is
part of General Motors that includes Cadillac, Hummer, Opel and Saab
To Bill Parfitt, Managing Director –
God bless GM. From the Victor we had when I was a child, to the Vectra I drive
now, I have only ever known Vauxhall. The comfort, the handling, the speed is
second to none. It’s a legacy I hope to pass on to my own children if they can
ever understand that driving is not just something else to do when you’re on the
mobile phone.
I’m worried, Bill. Worried that the world is turning upside down. It’s this
commotion about climate change. The story is one big fake. Global waming is as
real as the Loch Ness Monster or Simon Cowell’s lunch pack.
You know what I’m
talking about. General Motors was part of the Global Climate Coalition set up to
put a stop to this delusion. And before that, GM set up National City Lines,
which bought up the railways and then closed them down. Can’t you do something
again to deal with the opposition? Perhaps sabotage the work of Greenpeace and
their allies, by legal means of course?
As
your slogan says,
Take Control.
Vauxhall replied –
We were both pleased to learn that you have been driving Vauxhalls for many
years and have been happy with them.
I am glad to know that you hope your children will also drive Vauxhalls.
