Virgin
and Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the
airline company Virgin and Peter Shullot about
climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one
of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier
and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other
companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is
made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
To Steve Ridgway, Chief
Executive –
Hello Gorgeous! Can I say that to you man to man?
It’s the strapline on your website so it should be okay. Don’t worry. I’m
happily married – or married at least – with two children. Do you say Hello
Gorgeous! to your wife? I did – she didn’t talk to me for a week. Enough of
this. I want to say what a great job Virgin Atlantic does. Your planes are
always full. Even when you take away the passengers in the toilets trying to get
into the Mile High Club they are still packed.
You and Richard Branson have put it over the big boys, providing a great airline
across the world in competition with your rival whose name we won’t mention,
despite their Bloody Awful behaviour.
I see that Richard Branson has committed all profits over the next ten years
from Virgin Atlantic and other parts of his empire to fight global warming,
estimated at £1.68 billion. Though praiseworthy, is it wise? Couldn’t it be
better spent slashing the price of tickets?
So I hope the bearded one is doing the right thing. Good luck to you and your
fine company.
Steve Ridgway replied –
Thank you for taking the time to write to use to let us know your thoughts.
We do believe that responsible businesses need to lead the way in developing
solutions for climate change and that is what Richard Branson’s commitment is
all about. We are also, as an airline, finding ways to reduce our impact on the
environment where we can.
