Volvo and Climate Change

Below are extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Volvo and Peter Shullot about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.

To Stuart Kerr, Managing Director –

The Volvo S80 has everything the successful businessman needs. Comfortable, spacious, and attractive. It always makes a favourable impression on whoever is reclining in the passenger seat and Mrs Shullot.

You’re known for your safety innovations and making cars that are as secure as the Queen’s handbag. No wonder your cars produce such a high level of CO2 emissions. The European commissars can’t have it both ways – both safe cars and low emissions. Sensibly you’ve taken the decision to go for safety over quackery. And that’s what the man in the street wants: cars that are safe and secure, and of course faster, bigger and more powerful.

Assure me that you won’t give in to the Commissars of Correctness and start producing cars fit only for Noddy and Fred Flintstone.

Stuart Kerr replied –

I very much enjoyed reading your point of view.

I can confirm that our core values are Safety, Quality and the Environment and we will continue to make cars that respect all three of these key factors. I can assure you that we have no intention of sacrificing safety into order to make a more environmentally friendly car as all 3 values are equally important.

I trust that this letter has allayed your fears and that you will continue to enjoy many miles of Volvo motoring.

Yours sincerely

Stuart Kerr
