Volkswagen and
Climate Change
Below are
extracts of letters between the car manufacturer Volkswagen and Peter Shullot
about climate change. The letters in full are at the bottom of the page. This is
one of 65 sets of letters so you can find out what your supermarket, energy
supplier and car manufacturer, and oil companies, airlines, house builders and
other companies really think about climate change. The name Peter Shullot
is made up – it is an anagram of The Polluters.
Volkswagen also owns Audi, Seat
and Skoda
To
Paul Willis, Director –
Volkswagen – as the people’s car – always knows what people want. But do we want
this “green car” – the Polo Bluemotion – which you’re developing? What’s the
point of owning a car with a top speed of 68mph when the speed limit is 70mph
and the Touareg does 116mph, can tow 3.5 tonnes, ford water up to half a metre
deep and climb slopes of 45 degrees, all with 267 g//km of CO2 emissions? Soon I
‘ll be taking it off road as that is what it was built for and see if it really
can do these things.
Finally, can I give another piece of advice? You don’t have a slogan. You own
Seat, so why not use their slogan,
auto emocion? Sorry, my
computer can’t do the nazi salute sign above the second o. Or Audi’s, which is
another of yours. Vorsprung Durch Technik. Great slogan, don’t know what it
means.
Volkswagen replied –
We are always happy to hear our customer’s comments, and we are pleased to hear
that you are enjoying driving your Touareg.
With regard to vehicles in development at the moment, we at Volkswagen are very
aware of environmental issues and how they affect us both now and in the future.
Our goal is to protect the resources of the earth for future generations. As
such we endeavour to produce vehicles with low Co2 emissions and that is why we
incorporated the diesel particulate filter as standard in the new Polo
BlueMotion.
The Volkswagen slogan is
“Aus Liebe zum Automobil.” = “For the love of the car”
“Auto emocion” = “Be driven by passion”
“Vorsprung durch technik” = “Progress through technology”
